Coach Confessions: When Your Wellness Journey Feels… Boring
The Myth of Endless Motivation
Something weird happened to me about a month ago — I got bored in my own health and wellness routine.
The motivation and energy I had at the beginning? Gone. The excitement had worn off, and I suddenly realized… this is just what the rest of my life looks like. And honestly? That thought felt heavy.
It’s hard being a health and wellness coach and admitting this. We’re expected to “walk the walk” and “talk the talk.” But here I am, struggling to get motivated to work out most days and even more so to eat in a way that truly fuels my body instead of working against it.
Why Boredom Happens in a Wellness Journey
Why isn’t it as simple as forming the habits and then cruising through life on autopilot?
Because we’re human — and our brains just don’t work that way.
Routine Fatigue – Doing the same thing over and over is a recipe for burnout. Same workouts. Same meals. Same morning routine. Eventually, it stops feeling exciting and just feels… stale.
Life Happens – Even locked-down habits can get thrown off when real life interrupts. New baby? Kid unexpectedly home from childcare? Your routine will change — sometimes overnight.
Plateaus – When the scale stops moving or your strength stalls, it’s easy to wonder, “What’s the point?”Sometimes all it takes is changing your approach, but boredom can convince you to give up instead.
Being “Good” Gets Boring – Eating healthy and working out is good for you, but let’s be real… it can start to feel monotonous. And when you imagine doing it for the rest of your (hopefully long) life, it’s easy to mentally check out.
What Stumbling Looks Like for Me Right Now
Right now, my “boredom stumble” looks like:
Giving up my gluten- and dairy-free eating plan… and eating all the things.
More sweets than I care to admit.
Telling myself I’ll work out “later” — and then never doing it.
Abandoning my solid bedtime routine for late-night TV and spouse catch-up time. (Not a bad thing in itself, but it’s wrecking my mornings.)
The Risk of Ignoring Boredom
When the boredom first crept in, I should’ve addressed it immediately. Instead, I ignored it — and it snowballed into disengagement and regression.
Suddenly, my workouts were gone, my eating habits tanked, and I put myself on the back burner to my work and my kids.
If I had pivoted earlier, it would’ve been a quick fix. Now, I’m in “dig myself out” mode — which is harder, but still doable.
My Game Plan for Rekindling My Spark
Shake Up My Routines – With my kids home for the rest of the summer, I’m experimenting with new schedules to give us all a boost of fresh energy.
Swap One or Two Meals a Week – New recipes (and letting my husband take over dinner sometimes) help break the “same food every week” rut.
Create a Mini-Challenge – Quick wins build momentum. A small personal challenge gives me little victories to stack up.
Reconnect with My “Why” – My original reason for starting no longer fits where I’m at. I’m reflecting on my new “why” and what health and wellness mean for me now.
Ask for Accountability – Reaching out to friends — and remembering that hiring a coach is always an option — helps keep me honest.
Permission to Be in This Season
Right now, I’m in survival mode — getting ready for my son to start kindergarten, building a business, working toward my personal training certification… and keeping my head above water.
Some seasons will feel like that. You’ll stumble. You’ll fake it until you make it. And you will come out the other side stronger.
The key is to listen to your mind and body, make adjustments when boredom creeps in, and remember: this season will pass.
